I can't count the number of times I have mentioned twitter this week alone only to hear, "oh, I don't do that," or "I don't have time for that," or "maybe I'll start that next summer." Not to diminish the value of twitter, but come on guys, it's not that deep! It takes about ten minutes to set up a profile and there is little to no time commitment to dabble. Just stop procrastinating, sign up, try it out and see how it works. You have probably spent more time messing with your email signature than you will need to spend to get twitter up and running for yourself or your business.
This is how social media experts make their salaries. They depend on people not experimenting with social media. The secret of social media, after all, is that a child can do it. Literally. There are tweeners out there on facebook, twitter and YouTube becoming some of the most connected and popular social media personalities in the world. If a 12 year old can figure it out, is it really something you need to put off till next summer, or hire an expert to show you how to do it?
Not to suggest that there is no place for social media experts. There are definitely many communications challenges and strategies when you're starting to build a successful prospect/client generator through your social media platform. That said, you don't need someone to help you get your first twitter profile. It's free, it takes five minutes. GO DO IT NOW.
Experimentation with new technologies and media is mostly painless. It's mostly free (if not completely free) and it rarely takes more than an hour of your time at first. You may really enjoy it and make more time to spend with it, but if not, you haven't lost anything. If you try it and find that it is not for you, simply delete your account and move on.
The morale of the story: experiment. Try it. Nike says it best: Just Do It.
